'Provision of learner transport services and bicycles is Dept responsibility' says MEC Lehari.

North West MEC for Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari said the delivery of 188 bicycles to the leaders of Sempapa Secondary High School in Mathibestad is the step towards resolving traveling challenges for learners of this school.

He said the Department will send a team of officials to conduct assessment on the distance travelled by learners to school on daily basis.

MEC Lehari said this following the school principal's request for learner transport services for learners traveling more than 7 kilometers to and from school. If the assessment proves that there are learners travelling more than 7 kilometers to school, the Department will definitely ensure that you get transport services. We are not doing you any favour but it is our responsibility to ensure that you get to school on time," said MEC Lehari who appealed to learners to take a good care of bicycles.

Handing over bicycles to the learners, MEC Lehari continues to encourage learners to take a good care of their bicycles. "These bicycles will take you through for years to come if taken care of,” he said.

Lehari requested parents through School Governing Bodys (SGBs) not to take or use children's bicycles. "These Shova kalula bicycles are meant to shorten the travelling time of learners to arrive in school on time, not for parents to use them for their own purposes," said Lehari.

Thanking the Department, the Sempapa Secondary School principal, Mr Ramaina Mosana said his school will appreciate the assistance of learners as they travel long distance to school.
The 15-year-old Seleman Mothusi, a Grade 9 learner of Sempapa Secondary was grateful to receive his bicycle. Seleman travels 4 kilometers alone to school. "I am grateful to everyone who put this whole gifting arrangement together. The bicycle will help me be on time and to do a bit of exercise to keep fit. That way I won’t be tired and stressed by the time I get to school. Sometimes the weather is not favourable for walking and you end up not going to school. The bicycle given to me will make a huge difference in my schooling," said the excited Mothusi.
